摩根士坦利暑期实习生专访

中山大学就业指导报专访:摩根士坦利暑期实习生Vicky
Campus Reporter: Hey, there. So glad you could grant our interview! So can you reveal some details of your summer internship in Morgan Stanley? What exactly did you do in HK?
Vicky: Sure,Stan! This summer, I was with Morgan Stanley Fixed Income Division. The division has Sales and Trading teams for credit, commodities, interest rate and currency products, distribution and research and I was doing interest rate and currency products. Sales and Trading is very different from IBD, and new joiners or interns can barely do any "job" but spending lots of time learning, about both hard skills and soft skills. Of the 10 weeks, I had 1 week at trading desk, 1 with structuring and all the others with sales. I worked closely with the more senior salespeople and got full exposure of the business they did, more than I expected.
C.R.: What kind of beyond-expectation-exposure have you got in FID?
Vicky: First of all is Product Knowledge. I had piles of books, training materials and real term sheets to study into. Knowledge of a wide scope of products was prerequisite of picking up the work.
Second is Market Knowledge. We had morning meeting everyday at 7:30am, conference call with Japanese, Korean, Singapore offices which played as summary and analysis of market movements, anticipation of coming market releases and inner communication of trading ideas and macro econ. I could catch only 30% at the beginning but 80% after I got to be familiar with the routine. In addition to this, I had access to various market reports and I sometimes spent the whole morning reading them.
Third is Sales Skills. I supported the senior sales persons on large sophisticated Fixed Income clients such as information digging and document preparing. Learned sales skills and gained transactional experience by listening to their phone calls to clients (we have all the lines connected), audited their internal discussion and 7 times of business trip to mainland China (my boss called it live case study). In the end, I began to develop my own clients and contact them on my own.
And finally is Trading. It is a project like feasibility analysis of a new type of product. Spent some time with each kind of trader and learned the philosophy and basic ideas of each of them. As a salesperson, one has to understand the trade thoroughly so as to articulate it in an understandable way to the clients who maybe have little finance knowledge.
C.R.: Wow, good for you! I remember you told me you planned to go to the States for post-grad last Christmas when we were in HK. Seems you want to settle down in HK right now. So the M.S. interning helped you shape your future career plan, right?
Vicky: Significantly! I was planning to study abroad before this summer and I took TOEFL this January and GRE this June. However, after this summer I changed my idea to working with them once I graduate next year. I love this job and the people in the team so much. It felt just as great as finding Mr. Right. Yes, I fell in love with what I did and I had infinite passion for it. I believe I would finally join them after one year's time.
C.R.: How many interns were there in your division and how many from mainland?

Vicky: In Fixed Income Division of Morgan Stanley, there are and only are two interns, one post graduate student from Peking-U and the other is me. In Investment Banking Division, there are totally more than 20 interns of which 5-6 are from mainland, mostly from Peking-U, Tsinghua and Fudan. Most of the IBD interns got the full time offer after the internship but for FID, we don't have the convention coz they rarely hired interns before and I was the first intern they recruited from mainland. I have to go through the formal recruiting procedure that is to begin soon and get replied no later than Nov.
C.R.: Thanks so much for your sharing and at last, any advice for freshman?
Vicky: More than happy to help! My advice is to keep your eyes open; have thorough understanding of the core courses; take academic things seriously, but studying is not the only thing you should do, do take part in activities, whatever they are; Intern as early as possible, even if you cannot intern at your ideal position or have to do something seemed a little irrelevant. (In my school, many students begin to have internship in the summer before junior year and as for me, in the winter vacation of my second year, I interned in CICC Beijing office, IBD. Then in last summer, I interned in ABN AMRO in HK, also IBD. During the last two internships, I didn't learn as much as in M.S., maybe it's because I was a little bit too young at that time, but my theory is one needs to learn how to make the best use of internship opportunities so it's better to do some intern for internships, haha! Plus it also gives you lots of advantages when applying for internship position you dream of.) Talk with the senior students or alumni; Learn English.

P.S. Vicky同学现已正式拿到Morgan Stanley香港固定收益部Offer,并将于2007年赴港工作。Big Congrats!!! ^-^
